Hey, my name is Mattie
Whether it's an individual or a couple I'm photographing, my job is to completely remove the pressure of the camera and guide the subject into genuine, unforced moments. I don't just press the shutter or walk away; I am entirely driven to create a space of authenticity, translating the real energy of unique stories into striking, timeless art.
That high-level intuition and drive were built over 20 years in the saddle and sharpened as an NCAA Division 1 collegiate equestrian athlete at UC Davis. Because of this, I don't just take horse photos—I deeply understand equine athletes and can read horse body language in a split second. I know exactly how to anticipate their movements, ensure we catch that perfect stride, and keep both horse and rider safe, calm, and looking effortless in a completely stress-free environment.
About the Name:
"Blu Genes"
In the equestrian world, every horse carries two identities: their everyday barn name and the registered name they carry into the show arena. My photography business is named after my own horse, my heart horse, Halston.
His registered name is Lopin N My Blu Genes—a nod to his striking blue roan coat. When it came time to name my business, Blu Genes Photography was the only choice that made sense. Halston represents the perfect blend of athletic drive, trust, and effortless beauty. Naming this brand after him is a daily reminder of exactly why I pick up my camera: to honor the unique, deep bonds that shape our lives, whether that connection is shared between two humans or a rider and their horse.
